Florida is a fantastic place to become a dental assistant, offering friendly communities, weekend adventures, and rewarding professional opportunities. For future-minded individuals, it’s a great state to build a long-lasting healthcare career. But once you’ve decided to become a dental assistant—what’s next?
The first step is proper training. While entry-level dental assistants in Florida do not need certification to work in an office, they must be certified by a Florida Board of Dentistry-approved school to legally operate x-ray equipment or perform more technical tasks. That’s where the Academy for Dental Assistants comes in, offering high-quality programs in the Tampa–St. Petersburg area to prepare you for a successful career.
Why Choose the Academy for Dental Assistants?
Our programs are designed to teach you the essential skills dentists and orthodontists look for in new hires. With a blended learning format—web-based study combined with hands-on training—you can gain professional experience in real dental settings. No prior experience is required, and you can go from beginner to certified assistant in as little as 12 weeks.
Programs Offered by the Academy
12-Week Dental Assistant Training Program
This comprehensive program trains students in the extended functions of dental assisting, including:
- Operative procedures
- Radiographic imaging (x-rays)
- Clinical and administrative skills
The program blends online learning with one in-person session per week for hands-on instruction. After completing the coursework, students complete a 200-hour internship at a dental office of their choosing—many even find paid internships!
Upon completion, students earn both the EFDA (Expanded Functions Dental Assistant) and Dental X-Ray Certification—both required to perform advanced duties in Florida.
6-Week Orthodontic Dental Assistant Course
Interested in orthodontics? This program prepares students to work alongside orthodontists, focusing on straightening teeth rather than general oral care.
With flexible day and evening schedules, the course includes:
- Independent online learning
- Weekly 4-hour hands-on lab sessions
It’s a great fit for current assistants expanding their skill set or newcomers pursuing a specialized field. Note: EFDA and X-Ray Certification may still be required depending on your employer.
Dental X-Ray Refresher Course
Already trained but need a brush-up? This 4-hour hands-on refresher is perfect for:
- On-the-job trained assistants
- Those moving to Florida who need to recertify
It’s not a prerequisite for the certification course but helps boost confidence and technical skill before pursuing the Dental Radiology Certification.
EFDA & Dental X-Ray Combo Course
Ideal for experienced dental assistants needing recertification or validation of their skills.
This one-day course includes:
- Self-paced online lectures and state exam
- A 7-hour clinical hands-on lab session
Upon completion, students receive state-approved EFDA and X-Ray Certification. Classes are offered monthly, and you’ll need a minimum of three months of dental office experience to enroll.
You can also choose to take the EFDA and X-Ray courses separately, but most professionals will need both.
Why Certification Matters
Dental radiology and extended function tasks are legal responsibilities in Florida. Certification ensures:
- Better job opportunities
- Legal compliance
- Higher pay and increased trust from employers
Compared to the cost of a single college semester, technical certification is affordable, faster, and career-focused. The Academy for Dental Assistants provides:
- Efficient training programs
- Blended learning for flexibility
- Real-world experience in dental offices
We’ve been helping Florida students for years, and with our state-of-the-art facility opening soon, there’s never been a better time to join.
