CDC COVID Guidance: Key Updates Explained
The CDC recently updated its COVID-19 guidance to help people better protect themselves and manage their risk. Here’s a simplified summary of the most important changes.
Stay Up to Date on COVID-19 Vaccines
The CDC continues to recommend staying current with vaccinations. COVID-19 vaccines help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death. While protection against infection can decrease over time, staying up to date is crucial—especially as new variants and vaccines emerge.
What to Do If You’re Exposed to COVID-19
- Quarantine is no longer recommended for most individuals.
- Instead, wear a high-quality mask for 10 days if exposed.
- Get tested on day 5 after exposure.
This applies whether or not you are up to date on COVID-19 vaccines.
Isolation Guidelines for COVID-19
If you test positive:
- Stay home for at least 5 days.
- You are most contagious during these first 5 days.
- Wear a high-quality mask around others at home and in public.
You may end isolation after day 5 if:
- You’re fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
- Your symptoms are improving or you had no symptoms at all.
After isolation:
- Continue masking through day 10.
- Avoid being around people at high risk until at least day 11.
Additional Guidance for Certain Individuals
If you:
- Had moderate illness (shortness of breath or difficulty breathing)
- Had severe illness (hospitalized)
- Have a weakened immune system
You should:
- Isolate for a full 10 days.
- Consult a healthcare provider before ending isolation.
- Consider a viral test before resuming normal activities.
If your symptoms worsen after ending isolation, restart isolation at day 0.
Testing and Physical Distancing Updates
- Routine screening for asymptomatic individuals without known exposure is no longer recommended in most community settings.
- Physical distancing remains helpful but is only one part of prevention.
- Consider the setting, local transmission levels, and ventilation when deciding whether to physically distance.
