This 4-hour hands-on EFDA/Dental Assistant Refresher Course is designed for experienced dental assistants who wish to refresh and enhance their clinical skills or for those preparing to take the Certification Course. Participants will receive hands-on practice in a supervised setting to refine techniques, strengthen confidence, and improve proficiency in essential Expanded Functions Dental Assisting (EFDA) procedures. Please note: This is not an instructional course.

This 4-hour, hands-on refresher course is designed for experienced dental assistants who want to refresh and improve their EFDA (Expanded Functions Dental Assisting) skills. It’s also ideal for those preparing for the EFDA Certification Course who want extra clinical practice in a supervised setting.

You’ll have the opportunity to refine your techniques, increase confidence, and strengthen your performance in key EFDA procedures.

Need More Instruction?
This refresher is not an instructional course. However, if you need help with a few specific procedures, we offer private one-on-one sessions with an instructor. Please note:

  • Private sessions are limited to 1–3 procedures

  • Pricing varies based on the procedures and is set by the instructor

  • If you need practice with more than 4 procedures, we recommend enrolling in the full EFDA Refresher Course

This course does not provide students with an EFDA Certification. This is not an instructional course; rather, it is designed exclusively for students to practice and refine the skills they have already acquired.

The EFDA / Dental Assistant Refresher Course is $300.

Hands-On Clinical Session
The in-person session runs from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at our facility. This supervised, hands-on training allows dental assistants to gain more experience and confidence with Expanded Functions procedures.

  • Place & Remove a Dental Dam
  • Place & Remove a Matrix Band
  • Place & Remove Retraction Cord
  • Fabricate a Temporary Crown
  • Removal of Excess Dental Cement
  • Place & Remove Temporary Restorations
  • Apply Bases & Liners
  • Suture Removal
  • Apply Dental Sealants (Upon Request)

Required Supplies for the EFDA Refresher Course

Students must bring the following supplies to class:

Instruments & Equipment:

  • 4-Hole Slow Speed Motor with Straight Attachment (for polishing & making a temporary PFM with acrylic bur)

  • Basic Set-Up: mirror, explorer, cotton pliers, air-water tip

  • Safety Glasses & Mask

Disposables:

  • Patient Bib
  • Saliva Ejector

  • 2×2 Gauze (minimum of 4–5 pieces)

  • Disposable Gloves (minimum of 5 pairs)

  • Tray Covers

Materials for Clinical Procedures:

  • Retraction Cord and Cord Packer (any size)

  • Acrylic Bur

  • Temporary Crown & Bridge Material (your office’s choice)

  • Temporary Cement

  • Mixing Pad & Spatula (for Temporary Cement)

  • Prophy Paste, Disposable Prophy Angle, Floss

  • Alginate Material (enough for 1 upper or 1 lower impression)

  • Plaster or Stone (enough to pour study models from alginate impression)

  • Alginate Impression Trays (Maxillary & Mandibular – medium and large sizes)

  • Mixing Bowls & Spatulas (for alginate impressions and study models)

  • IRM and Cavit (or other temporary filling material your office uses)

  • Base or Liner (Fuji, Dycal, Ketac, Lime Lite – any material your office uses)

  • Dental Dam Material, Posterior Molar Clamp, Dental Dam Forceps, Dental Dam Frame

  • Tofflemire Retainer, Matrix Band, Wooden Wedge

Important Notes

  • Supplies are not provided by the school. Students must either bring all required items listed above or rent supplies for $50 through the school.

  • To rent supplies after registration:

    1. Log in to your account at www.academy4da.com.

    2. Navigate to “Payments/Add to Cart” at the top of the Home Page.

    3. Scroll down to 1-Day Certification Courses.

    4. Add to your cart the $50 EFDA Supplies, and proceed to Check Out. This must be completed before attending the course.

  • If you are bringing your own supplies, you are responsible for bringing every item listed above. The school does not provide individual supplies to students who choose not to rent.

For students who would like a refresher on the procedures before attending class, we provide step-by-step video tutorials on our YouTube Channel. These videos cover all EFDA procedures that you will practice on your class date.

To access:

  2. Select “Playlists”.

  3. Open “Dental Assistant Clinical Procedures” under the EFDA/X-ray Certification Procedures Playlist.

Reviewing these videos before attending is highly recommended to help you feel prepared and confident when performing the procedures in class!

Our business office must receive written notice at least 7 days prior to the scheduled class date of the Refresher Course in order to transfer to another class date. If notice is received after this time, a $100 transfer fee will be applied. Refunds are processed according to the Cancellation and Refund Policy outlined on your online Registration Form.
