TAKE THIS COURSE

This EFDA Certification Course is for dental assistants with at least three months of on-the-job experience and prior training in expanded functions. Students must demonstrate proficiency in EFDA procedures and pass the online exam with a minimum score of 75%. Upon completion, students will earn the Florida Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification, qualifying them to perform these procedures as required by the Florida Board of Dentistry.

This course is designed for dental assistants who have received formal training in expanded functions from a licensed dentist and have completed a minimum of three months of on-the-job experience. To be eligible for certification, students must be proficient in performing Expanded Functions procedures in a clinical setting. Certification requires passing the online EFDA exam with a minimum score of 75%. Upon successful completion, participants will receive the Florida Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification. This course certifies that the dental assistant is knowledgeable in, and capable of performing, the Expanded Functions procedures as required by the state of Florida.

Note: As part of the clinical lab portion of the course, students must demonstrate the ability to complete dental charting on paper. A paper-based dental charting test will be administered to fulfill this requirement.

This Certification Course is divided into two parts:

Part 1 – Online State Board Exam

  • Includes the Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Exam (50 multiple-choice questions).
  • All required study materials are provided online through a combination of PowerPoints and PDF documents.
  • Once you register and submit payment, you will immediately have access to Part 1 under “My Courses” on our website.
  • The exam is self-paced, and must be submitted at least 48 hours before attending your class date for Part 2, the clinical hands-on portion.
  • A passing score of 75% or higher is required on the exam.

Part 2 – Clinical Hands-On Assessment (In Person)

  • Held at our facility on the specific class date you select at registration.
  • Students must perform the EFDA procedures independently, without instruction.
  • Proficient demonstration of competency in these procedures is required to earn the Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification.

Completion & Certification

  • Part 1: Passing grade of 75% or higher on the online exam.
  • Part 2: Successful performance of EFDA procedures in person.
  • Upon completing both parts, you will be awarded your Florida Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification.

This is a hybrid certification course. The informational modules and State Board Exam for the Expanded Functions Certification must be completed online (Part 1) before attending the in-person clinical hands-on lab portion (Part 2) at our facility on the date you select at registration.

Upon demonstrating competency in the clinical hands-on lab and achieving a score of 75% or higher on both online exams, you will be awarded a Florida Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 months of on-the-job training in a dental office is required before attending this course.

  • You must be able to perform EFDA procedures independently in Part 2 (see the Performance Checklist for procedures required to be completed during Part 2).

  • This is a Certification Course, not a training course. You will be performing EFDA procedures for evaluation, and we are certifying your competency. You may perform the procedures as you were originally taught.

Employment Verification:
To attend this course, you must submit an Employment Verification Form signed by a licensed dentist. This form must confirm that you have worked under the dentist’s supervision for at least 3 months and that you can perform EFDA procedures.

Important Note: This course does not provide instruction on how to perform EFDA procedures. It is solely designed to certify that you are competent in completing them.

The state of Florida requires all dental assistants to hold two certifications before working with patients:

  1. Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) Certification

  2. Dental Radiology (X-ray) Certification

Florida does not typically accept dental assisting certifications from other states, as the state does not have reciprocity agreements. In addition, Florida does not accept the CDA Certification from DANB as a substitute for state-required credentials.

For more information, please visit the Florida Board of Dentistry Website under Dental Assistant / Expanded Duties FAQs.

The Business Office must be notified in writing at least 7 days before the scheduled Part 2 – Clinical Hands-On session in order to transfer to another class date. If written notice is received less than 7 days before Part 2, a $100 transfer fee will apply. Refund requests must also be submitted in writing and will be processed according to the Cancellation and Refund Policy outlined on your online Registration Form. Please note that all refunds will omit the 3.5% transaction fee charged by the credit/debit card processor. In addition, both Part 1 (online exams) and Part 2 (clinical hands-on portion) must be completed within 90 days of registration. After 90 days, both parts will expire, and no refund will be issued.
